#3- Help, Please!
There are times when one person cannot accomplish the job. This is especially if the dog has had a bad experience previously. Sometimes they like to wiggle when you are trying to the the job done. If you need another person to help, don’t be afraid to ask. The other person can not only help by making pup comfortable but can give treats and praise as you clean their ears. The key is to choose someone that Fido loves and is comfortable with, such as another family member. Otherwise it probably won’t work and upset them which is the exact opposite of what you want to do.
#4- Please, No poking or Proding. Massage is Your Bestie
Being a neat freak, the first thing you may want to is to get those gunky clumps out of your dogs ears asap. If you could only get it done quick and poke and prod the thing out, right? Wrong. This forcefulness could prove counter productive . As was already mentioned in point #2, you want to create a positive experience. Poking and prodding is the last thing you want to do to reach that goal. So instead of attacking the gunky clump, massage it loose from Fido’s ear. In order to do that, you must do the following steps:
- Apply cleaning solution to the area until its moistened,
- Massage the base of the ear for about 5 seconds (or longer if needed). (
- Ensure that the cleaning solution get into the ridges of the ear canal in gentle manner as possible.
- Encourage fido to give their head a good shake to get out the gunky clumps and debris.
- Use a cotton swab and more solution to get whatever is remaining.
- If the ears are still dirty, repeat 1-5 as necessary.
Remember- if you are trying to create a good and comfortable routine, give treats in between as indicated with hack #2.
