Imagine receiving a difficult medical diagnosis at the same time as your soon to be best friend. That’s exactly what happened to two doggie best friends, a 10 year old bulldog named Harley and a 15 year old golden retriever named Buckeye. They were both given 4-6 months to live and formed a bond on the fated day they found out in 2018. Harley was diagnosed with Lymphosarcoma while Buckeye was diagnosed with Cholangiocellular Carcinoma. This was heartbreaking.
When life gives you lemons, then make lemonade
With the help of their adoring owner, over the next couple of months Harley and Buckeye they created and enjoyed a bucket list. Together, they engaged in a number of activities and memorable moments.
If you had a bucket list, what would you put? Probably shopping, purchasing that item you had your eye on but could not afford. Perhaps just a night on the town, new clothes, a filet mignon dinner at a famous 5 star restaurant and meeting your favorite superstar.
Well Harley and Buckeye went shopping at a doggie boutique. They also were showered with treats and lost of TLC by their owners. This included ice cream at night, truck rides, farm play dates, plush blankets, eating pot roast for dinner and bubble baths
“I think it’s really important to try to keep giving your pet the best quality of life till the very end,” Grace Kemp, Buckeye’s owner and a veterinarian, told WTOV9.com.
Buckeye was actually an rescue dog which the owners adopted. They lovingly took care of him and incorporated him into their family as one of their own. Although Buckeye was a senior dog, he often went to with with his pet mom to work at the Goodworks Veterinary Hospital in Ohio. She lovingly showed him an an example to other people on what good care could accomplish for a senior rescued dogs health and well-being.
Harley did not waste any time in the last few months of his life. In addition to being spoiled by his family, he got to ride in the back of the vehicles into town and skateboard down the road.
