puppy eating

We all know that Fido tends to have a seemingly endless stomach. They simply can’t get enough. Dinner, snack, scraps from breakfast and they still want more. However, as pet parents we must remember that dogs digestive system does not work the same way that our does. So you must be careful to make sure Fido doesn’t eat something that will make him sick. Even if poochie begs for a treat, avoid the foods below at all costs.

grapes dog should not eat

Grapes

Grapes are a popular fruit that people snack on and put into fruit salads. They have a ton of health benefits. However, for dogs it was recently discovered that could contribute to kidney failure according to the ASPCA. Some dogs eat grapes with no issues but others develop digestive distress such as vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue. Some develop other serious illnesses. Better sate than sorry and just avoid them all together.

Chocolate

As much as we love chocolate, we absolutely cannot give it to our furry bestie. This is because theobromine, which is a chemical in chocolate, is toxic to dogs. The less milk and sugar content chocolate has, the more harmful it will be to your dog. So chocolate in any form, including in baked goods, should never be given to Poochie.

onion garlic dogs shouldnt eat

Onions

The ASPCA warns against onions and all vegetables in the onion family. If your dog consumes onions in large quantities, it could damage their red blood cells. If Poochie happens to consume a small amount she is probably fine but I would avoid onions in general.

Garlic

The ASPCA warns against dogs consuming Garlic. It have the same effect as onions in Dogs. However, dogs should not consume it at all. Anything with products that contain garlic should also be avoided.

Avocados

Avocados are considered a superfood with their healthy fats, vitamin E and anti-inflammatory properties. However, a chemical called Persin is found in Avocado pits. Persin as a result gets absorbed into the scrumptious edible fruit. As a result, many animals tend to have a bad reaction to them. Dogs may be prone to upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea if they eat a lot. They can also mistakenly eat the pit which could block their digestive tract and cause problems.

Gum

While Gum is not actually a food one can consume, lost of people eat it to keep their breath fresh. Even if Fido’s breath is smelly, absolutely positively do not give him Gum! Alot of gum contains Xylitol which dogs cannot digest. This can cause severe blood sugar drops, disorientation and even seizures. It can be fatal in large amounts. SO avoid this like the plague.

food dogs avoid

Almonds

Almonds are packed full of nutrition but like the other aforementioned foods, I could make your dog sick. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and upset stomach. This is because a dogs digestive system cannot process nuts.

Popcorn

Family movie night on Saturday with a big bowl or bag of popcorn and loads of butter sounds fun and scrumptious. But sorry, Poochie you cant have any. While popcorn in and of itself is not toxic to dogs, the uncooked seeds can cause digestive problems and lead to dental disease. If Fido must have popcorn for movie night, purchase popcorn specifically for Dogs.

Peppers

Mild peppers such as green, red or yellow bell peppers have nutritional value and are good for your dog to consume. However, Hot peppers can cause damage to your dogs digestive system. Dogs cannot handle hot food similar to humans.

Beer

Don’t even try it. Fido may want to get in on the party and have some fun but beer is toxic to dogs. The ethanol and hops in beer makes dogs especially sick. SO please, just don’t give him any!

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list. Please check with your vet for more information on the foods dogs should avoid.
