Veterinary Student Urges People To Adopt This Coming National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

Dogs are excellent additions to the family; they provide love and companionship. However, people often forget the most important thing that comes with taking in a pet which is responsibility. Helena Wayt, a veterinary student at Texas College of Veterinary  Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, urges people to consider adopting dogs in the shelter in honor of National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day.

Why Not Adopt a Furry BFF?

Sadly, more of our furry friends are abandoned rather than adopted. Wayt stated that by adopting a pup from the shelter, people would be saving a life and providing an animal a second chance to be part of a family. Adopting also offers an opportunity for another animal to be rescued and be nursed back to health. This would make a different to many dogs needing a loving home.

Another benefit of adopting from a shelter is that most of these dogs have already been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, or even dewormed. A bulk of shelters provide such services to ensure that these animals are well taken care of by a veterinarian. Shelters also make certain that the animals are given a nurturing home by hosting a meet-and-greet to find suitable owners.

Choose Whats Right For You

Wayt explained that it is significant for aspiring animal owners to choose an animal that fits their lifestyle. For example, puppies need a lot of trips to the bathroom and a lot of attention. If the owner might work long hours, it is recommended to pick an older dog.

If you remain indecisive on adopting, some shelters have a foster care program, too. Homeless pets are given temporary homes, necessary treatments, and a chance to show their temperament until such time that they find permanent homes where they will be loved forever. Wayt mentioned that this such a great chance to train the animals and get to know them more.

Adoption is Less Money

Adoption may come at a certain fee, but it is significantly less than buying a dog in stores and paying for treatment that the shelters have already provided. So, if you’re confident in owning a pet, consider adopting in a shelter. Save yourself from buying and, at the same time, allowing a pet to have a second chance. Who knows? They might change your lives for the better.
